Four of K2's 2026 men's boots share a flex index of 120, and they are not four colourways of the same shell. The Recon 120 BOA, Mindbender 120 BOA, BFC 120 BOA, and Cortex 120 Zonal BOA span 98mm to 100mm of last and low to high volume — and only one of them publishes the tech inserts a pin binding needs. The flex number is the least informative spec on the box.

Last width is a cross-section, not a fit
Last width is measured across the forefoot at a reference shell size. It's a single number describing a single plane of a three-dimensional object, and it's the number every retail listing leads with because it's the easiest one to print.
Volume is the spec that decides whether your foot goes in. It describes how much room the shell holds through the instep, the ankle, and the heel pocket — the places where a boot actually hurts. The table above makes the point cleanly: the Recon and the BFC are both 100mm lasts, and one is published as medium volume and the other as high. Same forefoot width, materially different boot.
If you have a high instep or a thick ankle, a 100mm last in a medium-volume shell can be tighter over the top of your foot than a 98mm last in a shell with more height. Width and volume are independent variables, and shopping on width alone is how people end up having a shell punched three weeks into the season.
The four fits, plainly
BFC 120 — 100mm, high volume. The roomiest of the four. Built for a wide forefoot with a high instep or an ankle that doesn't disappear into a narrow shell. Published with tech inserts explicitly absent, so it's an alpine boot and stays one.
Recon 120 — 100mm, medium volume. The default. A wide-ish forefoot in a shell that doesn't give up height everywhere else. The heat-moldable liner does the rest.
Mindbender 120 — 98mm, medium volume. Narrower forefoot, same volume through the middle. This is the one that publishes tech inserts, which makes it the only boot of the four confirmed to work in a pin binding — relevant if you're looking at something like the Kingpin against the Duke PT, because the Kingpin will only take a boot like this one.
Cortex 120 Zonal — 98mm, low volume. It ties the Mindbender for the narrowest last and is the only one of the four at low volume, which makes it the tightest overall fit. A performance fit for a genuinely narrow, low-volume foot. If you have to think about whether your foot is low volume, it probably isn't.
What flex 120 does and doesn't tell you
All four boots carry the same flex index because they're the same rung of K2's ladder — roughly, an advanced-to-expert adult stiffness. That ranking is meaningful inside K2's line: a 120 is stiffer than a 100 and softer than a 130 from the same maker.
Across brands it collapses. There is no shared test that produces a flex index, so a 120 from one manufacturer and a 120 from another are two marketing numbers that happen to match. Use flex index to place a boot within one brand's range. Use last width and volume to decide whether it fits you. And use the shell fit itself — with the liner out, toes to the front, checking the gap behind your heel — to decide anything at all. Choosing between the Recon and the Mindbender
These two are the ones genuinely cross-shopped, because they share medium volume, a GripWalk sole, and a walk mode. The decision comes down to two things.
Forefoot width: 100mm against 98mm. If you know you're a wider foot, the Recon starts closer to right and needs less shell work.
Bindings: the Mindbender publishes tech inserts and the Recon doesn't publish the spec at all. If there is any chance you'll want to skin on this boot in a pin binding, take the boot that states it — no amount of shell punching adds inserts later, and an unstated spec is not a confirmed one.
If neither of those pushes you, they're close enough that the shell fit in a shop should decide it. That is not a cop-out; it is the correct answer for boots, and no spec table replaces it.
