Most people shop the Mindbender by the number — 89, 96, 99 — and treat the letter as a trim level. It isn't. The letter is the layup, and within this line it changes the ski more than a few millimetres of waist width ever will. The K2 Mindbender 89Ti and the 90C sit one millimetre apart underfoot and 443 grams apart per ski. They are not the same ski in two widths.

What Ti and C actually are

Ti models carry a Titanal layer — a hardened aluminium alloy sheet, in K2's case a Y-shaped beam running through the ski. Titanal is dense and damp. It resists twisting, absorbs vibration, and holds an edge on refrozen snow that a lighter ski skips across. It also weighs a great deal for the volume it occupies.

C models replace that with carbon fibre in K2's braided Spectral Braid architecture. Carbon buys torsional stiffness per gram far more efficiently than metal does, but it doesn't damp the same way. A carbon ski of equal stiffness will feel livelier and more nervous at speed than a metal one, and it will transmit more of the snow surface to your feet.

That's the trade in one sentence: metal buys calm, carbon buys lightness.

One row breaks the pattern: the 116C is the heaviest ski in the table, 40g above the 108Ti, so “carbon is the lighter family” holds everywhere except at the widest end. Radius and weight vary with length, so those columns are anchored to each ski's shortest published length. Read them as a consistent basis for comparing models, not as the number you'll get in a 184.

Three things the table tells you

Flex tracks the layup, not the width. Every Ti model in the line is published at flex 8. The C models run 5, 6, 6, and 7 as they widen, and K2 publishes no flex at all for the 116C. K2 isn't building a stiffness ladder across widths — it's building two families and letting width vary inside each.

Width does not predict weight. The 96C is published at 1,630g per ski, lighter than the 89Ti at 2,003g, despite carrying seven more millimetres underfoot. If you are choosing between those two on the assumption that the narrower ski is the lighter, quicker one, the specs say the opposite.

Ti models turn longer. Compare each Ti to the C model nearest it in width: 89Ti at 16.6m against 90C at 13.0m; 108Ti at 22.9m against 106C at 18.9m. The metal skis are built around larger arcs. That is consistent with what they're for — carrying speed across variable snow rather than redirecting quickly in tight terrain.

Which family you want

Go Ti if you ski fast on firm snow, if you're heavier or more aggressive than average, or if you ski in the East and spend real time on hardpack and refrozen crud. The mass is the point. It's what keeps the ski from deflecting off frozen chunder and what lets it hold a long arc without chattering.

Go C if you're lighter, if you ski a lot of moderate-speed mixed terrain, if you tour occasionally on your resort ski, or if you want a ski that's easy to redirect in trees and moguls. Also go C if a 400g-per-ski difference matters to you on the chairlift and at the end of a long day — at the extremities, that penalty is felt as swing weight rather than as static mass, and the scale reading understates it.
